OK, so I haven't been as good as I'd like to be with posting snips of stuff. O_o Anyway, I've had this little snippet sitting around for a while and someday I'd like to do something with it. Here's hoping I do. ^_^
Recca: *pales* Oh dear G-d, no.
Tokiya: *just twitches*
*How on Earth did I ever beat him?* That thought ran in unchecked spirals through Hanabishi Recca's skull as he watched his teammate, cool as ice and undisturbed as a mountain lake, finish off his opponent. He wasn't the only one thinking it, either. All of team Hokage was staring in rapt fascination while Mikagami Tokiya finished off Team Ku's first contender without even breaking a sweat. The only sign that he was not made of the same ice as the sword he wielded was his smile: small, proud, and deadly. It clearly spoke of how much of a waste of time it's wearer thought his opponent was. Recca was tremendously glad that that particular facial expression had never been turned on him. He might have surrendered on the spot.
Mikagami slowly turned and walked down the stairs from the arena. He accepted their praises as though they were his due and their duty. He accepted their exuberance as the price he had to pay to find his sister's murderer, showing not one iota of his irritation as Fuuko, Kondo, and Ganbo hung off him like monkeys on a tree. But when his eyes met Recca's... Recca took a step back. The battle-lust, the fires of vengeance, burned hotter in those ice-blue depths than even the flame of Recca's Dragons. Recca couldn't quite repress the shudder that worked its way through him as he met those fires head on.
One corner of Mikagami's lips quirked upwards--he hadn't missed Recca's actions, or the reason for them. He missed nothing. He had scared the younger boy and he knew it. Seeing that cold killer's smile on his senpai's lips, Recca began to understand why the Ku's team leader had called Mikagami "Meguri Kyoza's evil prodigy".
Fortunately for Recca, Domon's late arrival distracted them both. When next he met his teammate's gaze, it was as flat and cold as it ever was. No fires burned in its depths and Recca was able to forget that he had ever seen them there in the first place. A fortunate thing... they had a fight to win, and he couldn't win his if he were distracted.
