Happy Pi Day, everyone! *beams*

What is Pi day, you ask? Well, quite simply, it is the day we celebrate the glorious number "Pi". As you may know, the number 3.14159... (otherwise known as "Pi") is very important in geometry. It is number which helps us determine the circumference, area, even volume of a circular (or 3-D circular) shape. In other words, quite an exciting number. ^_^ (Well... if you're a math geek like me, that is. *giggles*)

Now, back to Pi Day. ^_^ At my mother's school, the celebrations can get quite rowdy. They sing Pi Day songs (such as the ever popular, "Oh Number Pi", sung to the tune of "Oh Tannenbaum"), the eat Pi Day treats (apple pie, of course), and they do endless Pi Day problems. Quite the party, really. ^_^

So, I leave you all with a little "Pi" Day happiness of your own:

If you have a pie and you wish to share it with 7 of your friends and the pie is 8*Pi in. in circumference, how much pie (in square inches) will you each get to eat? Happy nashing!
Highlight below if you'd like the answer:
C=Pi*diameter
8*Pi=d*Pi
d=8

If diameter=8" then radius=4"

A=Pi*radius squared
A=Pi*4*4
A=16*Pi
A=(roughly) 50 1/4 square inches of pie

Now aren't you glad I didn't make this a cylinder problem? *impish grin*

3/15/05 -- 8:00 AM -- Oh boy. That just takes the cake. I misread a problem that I wrote. *sweatdrop* To get the answer, you need to divide the final solution above *points upwards* by 8. *twitch* Which would make it roughly 6.3 square inches of pie per person. ^_^
