Post-Sx Thoughts
Jan. 8th, 2010 11:08 amI don't understand why doctors and anesthesiologists think that every person they see wants to be in a fugue or comatose state for the 4-5 days post-op. Maybe someone can explain to me?
1) They want you on Ambien every night (Yeah! I have a new drug to add to my new most hated list! I have never in my life felt more unbalanced, ataxic and subsequently irritable. No nausea, but the Toradol -- another new "fave" -- took care of that. Funny... it's not supposed to make me nauseous according to the nurses and they were very surprised that it had. *pause* Which surprises me because when you pull up the drug information sheet, it induces nausea and vomiting in > 10% of patients... just like any other NSAID. *falls over*).
2) Got a little ahead of myself with the Toradol, but here's the next section on -- you guessed it! Stupor inducing pain medications. They offer you Vidocin and/or Percoset. And I'm sorry, Bill Engvall, I have to disagree -- these are two drugs who made my most-hated list long ago and I do not like visiting Vicodin-land. 'Tis a silly place and the people there are quite mad. They also gave me Tylenol #3 with Codeine... which is like popping sugar pills for me. It just flat out does not work. Never has. Another thing that the nurses refused to belief. Nice alternative, huh? Well, I reject your drug reality and substitute my fucked-up, sober one. Phthbbbbt.
3) All these meds are making you sick? Hmm... will, then try this nifty little drug: Gravol. And guess what? That's right! It knocks you out, too! *looks up drug* *falls over flat* They get this from their office in Canada because it isn't FDA approved yet and are very proud of it. *twitch* It's Dimenhydrinate. *sweatdrop* Maybe next time I'm in I should tell them it's sold OTC here as Dramamine? O_o;;; So, no wonder if makes you sleepy -- it's an antihistamine! Well, on the upside, as one of the US's premier motion sickness drugs, it aught to be beneficial for not only the nausea, but the Ambien-induced ataxia, as well.
*massive twitchage shall commence here*
Can I just... not take any of this? I'll take the antibiotic, 'cuz that makes sense. I'll ice my forehead for 5 minutes every 30 to reduce the chance of swelling, 'cuz that makes sense. I'll even soak my head in epsom salts for 30 minutes twice a day to reduce the chance of swelling, 'cuz that makes sense. The rest of it? I'll take the dose of Toradol this morning because it's an NSAID and may actually help. Hopefully if I take it with something substantial to eat, it won't bug me too much. *pause* Wait a second. They also want me on prednisone. *holds up finger* Waitwaitwait. Toradol is an NSAID with it's major potential side effect being GI ulceration. In the veterinary world NSAID + Steroid (any NSAID, any Steroid) = stomach ulcer. *headdesk* *pause* *wince* Owwwww... O_O;;; Bad idea. Don't repeat. OK, so maybe I'll wait until tomorrow to start the pred. 24 hours of wash-out should be enough.
Silly doctors. Mada mada da ne. ((*eg* Yes, I've been gorging on Prince of Tennis for the last week, why do you ask?))
How the hell do people maneuver post-op instructions if they don't have a medical degree? *falls over* I have deep sympathy for you. Anyway, I'll let you know how it goes. ^_^
*snugs*
Oh! As a side note -- procedure went well, no other complications or problems. If you want to know further details about what I had done, e-mail me or call, and I'll tell you. Just don't want to blather on about the specifics in my LJ. ^_^ Ja mata ne!
