Yuletide Recs, get your Yuletide recs!

First off, a reminder that I have already pimped my three wonderful gifts on my DW ( 1 for Winter Song (Music Video - Sara Bareilles) and 2 for Sono Te wo Dokero | Hands Off! ). They can also be found on my LJ, if that is your reading preference.

And now… all the other recs. ^_^ Many of these have not been getting a lot of love, because the fandoms are small, even for Yuletide, but they are amazing stories and I would strongly recommend giving them a chance. ^_^

14 recs in Beauty and the Beast (1991), Boston Legal, Dark Is Rising Sequence - Susan Cooper, Devil Went Down to Georgia (Song), Dollhouse, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, Fushigi Yuugi, Saturday Night Live/Hamm & Buble - SNL Sketch, Jeremiah (TV), Pippin (Musical), Scarlet Pimpernel - Baroness Orczy, Scarlet Pimpernel - Baroness Orczy/Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis, Shawshank Redemption - All Media Types and Stick It (2006)

In the mirror (1385 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Belle (Disney's Beauty and the Beast), Original Female Character
Summary: When Alcine tends to the fire that night, the lady is already in bed, silver ringlets peeking out from underneath her nightcap. Her face is creased with sadness and her hands tremble as she plucks at the quilt. The rose rests on a pillow, its garish pink highlighted by the worn hue of her skin. The lady holds the mirror in one gnarled hand. Almost ritually, the lady brings the mirror up high and says, "Show me the Beast."

I loved this glimpse into the darker side of Beauty and the Beast and how the bright world of the Disney movie is but a sad hallucination to the haunted Belle. Though part of me still hopes that it was somehow true once upon a time for her, I enjoyed the poignant tragedy just as is. ^_^

Alternaties (1458 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Boston Legal
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Denny Crane/Alan Shore
Characters: Denny Crane, Alan Shore
Summary: In another time and place...

Denny and Alan get their happily ever after and a glimpse into other worlds that might have been. SO cute, SO in character. AW. ^_^ And any author who gives a nod to my favorite golden-haired Captaink Kirk gets a major nod in my book!

Once and Future (1696 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Dark Is Rising Sequence - Susan Cooper
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Bran Davies/Will Stanton
Characters: Bran Davies aka Pendragon, Will Stanton, Jane Drew
Summary: Neither the Dark nor memories can be banished forever.

This is SUCH a beautifully rebuilt DiR world. After the Old Ones have left, Will is left behind to usher in the new age of the Old Ones while Bran cycles through incarnation after incarnation trying to learn all he'll need to be the Pendragon. What I loved most of all, though, was the pull they feel towards each, even when Bran can't remember Will, and the way that they unconsciously begin to mirror the relationship between Merriman and Arthur… until Bran, as he so often does, simple refuses to be bound to that fate any longer. SO well done. ^_^

Deal (1615 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Devil Went Down to Georgia (Song)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: The Devil, Johnny (Devil Went Down to Georgia)
Summary: The Devil's been having a hell of day. First God, then Death, and now a fiddle player named Johnny.

This was light-hearted, funny, more than a bit hot and perfectly in tune with the song from which is spawned. And Johnny is such a cocky, yet loveable son-of-a-bitch… and the Devil hasn't lost quite a definitely as it seems he had. A very fun romp!

The Weight of Her Sins (1248 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Dollhouse
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Adelle DeWitt, Topher Brink, Alpha (Dollhouse)
Summary: Adelle smiles mirthlessly. Alpha is all of Topher’s best work. Echo is all of Topher’s best work. The entire bloody train ran right off the rails on Topher’s best work. Adelle tries to put the pieces together again. Set during Epitaph 2, with spoilers for the entire series.

OMG. TOPHER. ALPHA. ADEEEEEELLLLLLLLLE. I still have so many feels for this show in general and the Epitaph storyline in particular and this was a beautiful look at some missing time when Adele and the others first return to the Dollhouse. Topher and Adele's relationship, as always, breaks me, and the author has captured Alpha's best eccentricities to a tee. ^_^

Pocket Aces (1890 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman
Rating: Explicit
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jake Slicker/Hank Lawson
Characters: Jake Slicker, Hank Lawson
Summary: Hank's never been one to bluff, and this time he's all in.

Oh dear G-d. This was HOT… and made me seriously regret the fact that I was not a slasher in high school when this first came out. Also made me want to rewatch the entire Dr. Quinn series just to incorporate this relaionship into my headcanon. I love how the relationship between Jake and Hank slowly built from one of simple mutual shame and desire to one teetering on the brink of love. So sweet. ^_^

Prisoner's Dilemma (3922 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Fushigi Yuugi
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: nakago/hotohori
Characters: Nakago, Hotohori
Summary: AU: Set in a world where Miaka and Yui never appeared to fulfill their destinies as priestesses, Kutou and Kounan are locked in a seemingly endless war. Peace has begun to seem like an impossibility when the Emperor of Kounan is faced with a difficult choice that could spare his people.

OK. So. How long has it been since I have been fully in Fushigi Yuugi fandom? A LONG TIME, OK. (And YES, someday, I still plan to finish Osozaki Blooms. Someday. -.-;;;) But that is not what's important right now. What's important is that this story single-handedly re-invigorated my love for this series and with a pairing that I never dreamed I would ship. This AU takes a darker look at the world of the Four Gods and at who Hotohori and Nakago might have become in this altered time and space, yet still keeps them uniquely who they are, from a veiled glance at Hotohori's vanity to Nakago's pervasive sense of honor. This was BEAUTIFULLY written and I look forward to imagining what happens next… and hoping I get to someday see it in print. ^_~

Don't Stand So Close to Meat: A Hamm & Buble Text Adventure (6781 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Saturday Night Live, Hamm & Buble - SNL Sketch
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Jon Hamm, Michael Bublé
Summary: Every attempt at escape has, thus far, been thwarted. The exit points are fairly inaccessible to you, and you haven’t been able to get access to a phone to call for help. Even your stupid, stupid attempts to solicit help via the TV commercial were a fool’s errand: your desperate pleas all landed frame-by-frame on the cutting room floor, unheard and unheeded, and all you got for your trouble was a punch to your solar plexus. Funny how before this month, you couldn’t have pointed out your solar plexus even if you tried. Now it’s nicely labelled for you in purple and blue and a ghastly, jaundice-yellow blush. Thanks, Jon.Proving your own declining mental state, you’ve now resorted to trying to make a game of this for yourself. To wit:Welcome to Hamm & Bublé: The Text Adventure.

OMG, this story. *dies laughing* If you aren't familiar with the canon, go ahead and catch up on it really quickly -- really it'll take less than four minutes and it's funny ^_^ -- and read. If you ever liked those text-based adventure games as a kid (who didn't?) this is a perfect match-up for it and as dark and angsty as I anticipated the canon being… well. *snerts* I laughed my way through this one. ^_^

Second Chances (1357 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Jeremiah (TV)
Rating: Not Rated
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Jeremiah (Jeremiah), Devon (Jeremiah)
Summary: Maybe he’d gotten soft spending time at Thunder Mountain, but Jeremiah can’t help thinking the cell these great folks at Valhalla Sector had given him lacked a few basic amenities. There was the whole no toilet paper issue, plus no scented soap by the sink, and not once had they been by to put a mint on his pillow. On the other hand, maybe he really needed to learn to appreciate boredom more. That could be his new New Year’s resolution, now that he’d crossed ‘finding my dad’ off the list.

Oh, Jeremiah. *_* I'm so glad that someone took one of my fellow requesters up on writing for this show, especially because the author beautifully captured that blend of bratty kid and reluctant hero survivalist that so many of the characters in Jeremiah's world posess. Seriously, the tone of the narrative was spot on. ^_^

"You know, a one line note that said ‘still alive, but held hostage by fucking psychopaths who want to use you as leverage’ would’ve been great to have had at any point in these last fifteen years.”

How could you not love that? ^_^

we all could use a change of scene (8782 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Pippin (Musical)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Major Character Death
Characters: Leading Player, Pippin, Fastrada, Catherine
Summary: One after one they succumbed. They let the troupe lead them into the fire, into the sun. They smoked and withered, stupid and trusting and searching for more. Weren't they all just searching for more?

(*coughs* I pause in my Yuletide squee for a Broadway squee. Those of you on my f-list will understand, those here from the Yuletide comm… I beg your indulgence. ^_^)

AAAAAAH. PIPPIN. I am SO psyched for the A.R.T. production up in Boston (TERRENCE MANN, YOU GUYS. TERRENCE MANN.) and still not entirely convinced that I won't be heading up to see it at some point before it makes its inevitable move down to Broadway. Mind you, I have never seen a full production of Pippin, but I've loved the music ever since I first sang Corner of the Sky in 5th grade. So.

(I now return you to your normal Yuletide squee.) So, I was very happy to know that a Pippin fic was coming for Yuletide, especially because this one is SO deliciously dark and disturbed. I loved how the roles shifted throughout the story, the LP handing off to Fastrada who handed off to Pippin, who handed off to the LP, and Catherine handing off to the LP, as well. It was so wonderfully interwoven and created such a rich backdrop of a world that the world itself felt like another player in the story. SO lovely and it deserves more love!

As a side note… this fic is what I now picture going on inside the Master's head in Dr. Who. IT WOULD EXPLAIN SO MUCH. *_* ^_~

(Confession: I beta'd this… but my rec still stands because I am hardcore in love with this story. That is all. ^_^)

The Truest Account of That Enigmatical Wayside Flower (1034 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Scarlet Pimpernel - Baroness Orczy
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Sir Percy Blakeney/Marguerite St. Just
Characters: Percy Blakeney, Marguerite St. Just, Sir Algernon Blakeney, Lady Blakeney
Summary: Marguerite always felt that behind Percy's apparently slow wits there was a certain something, which he kept hidden from all the world--and most especially from her.

Oh, the Scarlet Pimpernel. *_* It's been a long time since I read the book, but this story made me want to reread the original canon. I love how by these small glimpses into Percy's past we can see how he became the man that he is. The writing is so lyrically beautiful and the culmination of Percy and Marguerite finally seeing that each is what the other has looked for all along was SO sweet. ^_^

All the Worlds (2235 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Scarlet Pimpernel - Baroness Orczy, Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Percy Blakeney
Summary: Lady Blakeney has her exits and her entrances, and altogether too many parts to play. Eventually, the masks take their toll.

AH. All the Scarlet Pimpernel feels this Yuletide, seriously. I would recommend you check them all out, but these two were my favorites. This one provided a very different look at how Percy became the man we all know as the Scarlet Pimpernel and it was such a uniquely creative look idea that I'M STILL NOT SURE HOW TO EXPRESS MY SQUEE. I mean… SP/Chronicles of Narnia crossover. REALLY? XD

“What would you do,” Percy wondered, “if you knew there were such a number of people who would perish for your want of action, only you knew not which action to take?”
...
“Why,” he marvelled, staring at the face that was his own, yet so unlike, “I might be anyone, mightn’t I?”
...
“I might be anyone at all.”

Living (2708 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Shawshank Redemption - All Media Types
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Andy Dufresne/Red
Characters: Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding, Andy Dufresne
Summary: After joining Andy Dufresne in Zihuatanejo, Red discovers that part of learning to live again is recognizing the importance of those who are close to you.

Oh, Shawshank Redemption. I am forever on the lookout for stories that live up to my love of the movie, that find that balance between showing Red and Andy's clear love and need for each other without crossing that quiet line that keeps them both in character. This story did that with ease and I happy-cried through the entire second half of it. SO lovely. ^_^

The Genesis of Cool (1147 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Stick It (2006)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Frank (Stick It), Poot (Stick It), Haley Graham
Summary: In the beginning, there was Frank and Poot, and they went on great adventures together.

This movie does not get NEARLY enough love. It is so unashamedly fourth wall breaking and so bitingly tongue-in-cheek and hilarious. This story captured that rolling vibe of non-linear awesomeness perfectly, along with the amusing interdependence of Haley and her pack of two. ^_^ LOVED IT.

And, AH, THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER FICS THAT I KNOW I'LL WANT TO REC, BUT I HAVEN'T HAD TIME TO READ. ARGH. So, I'm going to put this out there for now and will post more as I have a chance to, probably after author reveals. I mean… damn, I haven't even gotten to most of the book fandoms I love. THERE IS NIGHTRUNNER AND TAMIR FANFIC, GUYS. AND SWORDSPOINT. I can't. I just… ARGH, LIFE. Why so busy? :-P

Anyway, enjoy and please tell the authors you did when you do! ^_^
